Motorcycle training is not always mandatory, but it is a good idea to attend training and safety courses to hone your skills and make you a better and safer driver on the road. After basic training, motorcyclists learn everything the DMV in your state needs to know about you in about 15 hours – in the classroom or on a bike.

If you are just looking for more important information about riding, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation is an excellent source to find motorcycle classes.   You can simply enter your postcode and find the MSF Basic RiderCourse on their website or on the Facebook page of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.

The last part of the motorcycle driving licence is the driving skills test and you cannot be supervised by a motorcycle examiner. You will also need motorcycle insurance coverage for your bike if your state requires it.   As a result, the format of the tests differs from that of a driving licence and can cause problems for some people.

The process of obtaining a license typically requires both a written test and a practical competence test. If you pass the written exams, you will receive an authorisation which you can sign before taking the competence tests. With a driving licence you have the opportunity to learn the basics and ride a motorcycle in comfort before deciding whether to take an exam or the first of a series of written and handwritten driving tests.

One of the best and easiest ways to get a motorcycle license is, as mentioned above, to take a motorcycle safety course. Many states require or recommend that you take motorcycle courses before you obtain your motorcycle license.   These courses usually consist of a two to four day course in which you will work with an instructor personally to process everything you need to know to obtain your motorcycle license. These courses are suitable for complete beginners, even if you have never ridden a motorcycle. MSF offers a wide range of courses for beginners and experienced drivers who want to improve their skills.

All students attending the MSF “Basic RiderCourse” will receive a motorcycle helmet, and motorcycle insurance plans offer discounts for those who attend motorcycle safety training. If you pass the MSF course, you will also be entitled to discounts from your insurance company.   This course was designed by MSF and NYS DMV for motorcyclists who have had a license for more than a year. This is not a beginner course, but it is a quick way to obtain a motorcycle license. Before you attend the course, you must demonstrate basic driving skills on the road.

If you have just obtained a permit and have limited time on the road, you should visit the BRC at least once a month for the first two months.

If you apply for a driving licence, you will need to go further before you can obtain a driving licence, license plate and registration. California motorcyclists under 21 have two years to take a road test. After a certain period of time, however, they must be in possession of the motorcycle licence for at least two years before the test can be taken.   You will probably need to take a motorcycle skills course, which is normally optional for older riders, as well as a bike repair course.

A motorcycle driving licence allows individuals to practice motorcycle riding while a licensed motorcyclist 21 years or older is out of sight and watching. To apply for a motorcycle driving licence, a person must meet all the requirements to obtain a driving licence and complete a motorcycle safety course. Minors must take motorcycle driving tests to remove J-restrictions, but not for a full driving license.

People can apply for an M class at the age of 15 and have no restrictions on their driving licence, but must complete a motorcycle safety course at the age of 18.   In some states, a motorcycle driving licence is required to participate in the class, which includes a written examination. In some states, you must meet a minimum age (usually 16) and know how to ride a bike. A good starting point is the instructions for use of your state’s motorcycles, which you can pick up at your local DMV. Most states also require that you have a driving license, but not all states do so.

Check the state DMV website to find out where and when courses offered by the state itself or by a private company are taking place.  Before you even get your motorcycle license, it is a good idea to take a course for a year or two. If you already know how to ride a motorcycle, you can skip the course and simply take the written driving test.
