Getting Your Washington DC Motorcycle License

Once you have graduated from the MSF Basic RiderCourse, you will be issued a Virginia DMV Certificate. The certificate is valid for six months from your completion date as a waiver for the DC riding skills motorcycle test.

You must go to DMV with both the Virginia DMV Certificate and the MSF Completion Certificate.

You must pass the DC motorcycle rider knowledge test.

(Note: the Virginia and DC motorcycle rider manuals differ in several ways. To study the DC manual prior to your DC knowledge test go to

You may take the DC knowledge test before or after you take the Basic RiderCourse. If you take the test before the course, be sure to apply for a Motorcycle Learner’s Permit after you pass the knowledge test. This will make it much easier when you return for your endorsement.

In Other States (except Maryland)

Virginia has agreements with many other states to accept the Virginia DMV Certificate as proof of course completion and the Class “M2” endorsement. You will have to check directly with the DMV in your state.  Some states require a letter certifying your successful completion from the school.
